Thailand Persists in Seeking Schengen Visa Exemption

Thailand is relentlessly pushing for visa exemption for its citizens to travel to the Schengen Area. The Asian country is proactively engaging with other Southeast Asian countries in a bid to establish an agreement that would allow tourists to visit their territories without the need to apply for separate visas. The plan is to create a single visa system that would grant access to multiple countries, making travel within the region more convenient.

One of the countries Thailand plans to reach out to is Cambodia, as well as Laos, Malaysia, and Vietnam. This initiative aims to not only facilitate travel among these countries but also to lay the groundwork for subsequent negotiations with the European Union on visa exemption for Thai citizens.

Thailand’s agenda is driven by the desire to reciprocate the visa-free entry it currently extends to citizens of Schengen member states. The country is eager to make access to the Schengen Area more convenient for its citizens, aligning with its longstanding mission of negotiating visa-free travel with more Schengen countries.

In addition to the diplomatic efforts, Thailand is prepared to discuss mutual visa exemption for a longer period of time. The country also has a passport empowerment project in the pipeline, which is a prerequisite for beginning formal discussions on visa-free travel to the Schengen Area.

Thailand has already reached out to Germany for support in their quest for a visa-free travel agreement. The Prime Minister of Thailand emphasized the importance of easing travel restrictions for Thais, underscoring the need for a more reciprocal approach, given that citizens of Schengen countries can currently stay in Thailand for up to 30 days without a visa.

The Thai passport is currently ranked 109th globally, and citizens require visas to enter 119 countries, including those within the Schengen Area. The pressure is on to streamline travel and visa procedures to improve the passport’s global standing and make international travel easier for Thailand’s citizens.
