South African Tourism notes with concern reports of cancelled travel bookings from several African countries following recent protests and incidents targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.
As an organisation committed to promoting South Africa as a welcoming and inclusive destination, we unequivocally condemn all acts of intimidation, violence, discrimination and unlawful conduct directed at foreign nationals. These actions are unacceptable, do not reflect the values of our democracy, and stand in direct opposition to the spirit of “Ubuntu” that defines South Africa and its people.
South African Tourism stands with the Government of South Africa in reaffirming the country’s commitment to a rules-based constitutional democracy founded on human dignity, equality and the rule of law. While issues relating to illegal immigration remain a legitimate matter of public concern, these challenges must be addressed through lawful state processes and institutions. No individual or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands.
The recent vigilante-style actions and criminal behaviour witnessed in certain communities are the acts of a minority and do not represent the views of the overwhelming majority of South Africans, nor do they reflect government policy. South Africa remains committed to being a safe, welcoming and accessible destination for all travellers from across the African continent and the world.
Africa is South Africa’s largest source market and our connections across the continent are built on deep historical, cultural and economic ties. We value the contribution that African travellers make to our tourism sector and broader economy, and we remain dedicated to strengthening regional tourism, partnership and people-to-people relations.
We wish to reassure all visitors, partners and stakeholders that South Africa continues to welcome travellers from across Africa and beyond with warmth and hospitality. Law enforcement authorities are actively monitoring the situation and government continues to engage communities to ensure stability, safety and social cohesion.
South African Tourism will continue working closely with government, industry partners and stakeholders across the continent to promote responsible tourism, protect South Africa’s reputation as a premier destination, and foster unity and mutual respect among all who live in and visit our country.
