Paris Olympics: France Leads the Way as First EU Country to Issue Digital Schengen Visas

France is set to lead the way in digitalizing Schengen visa applications for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, becoming the first EU member state to do so. The country has established a new system called the “Olympic Consulate” to efficiently process applications from international athletes, journalists, and foreign delegations participating in the games.

The “Olympic Consulate” has been introduced to prevent the overload of visa applications from interfering with the current visa processing operations at French visa centers abroad. This move is crucial to ensure that visas are issued within the necessary timeframes for the successful organization of the Games, as stated by the France Ministry of the Interior.

Applicants will now be able to submit their visa applications through the France-Visas platform completely online, making France the first EU country to process visas in this manner. Furthermore, around 70,000 participants will not have their visas affixed to their passports but integrated directly into their accreditation cards.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11 and from August 28 to September 8, 2024, respectively. With an expected 1.5 million spectators from around the world, France is gearing up to host these events for the first time in a century.

It has also been announced that athletes and officials holding a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa will not be required to apply for a French Schengen visa to attend the Olympic Games. However, they will still need accreditation for the event.

In preparation for the games, France has invested heavily in security measures to ensure a safe and successful event. This has also impacted the launch of the Entry/Exit System, with the country pressuring the EU to postpone the system’s implementation to prevent potential chaos at its borders during the summer.

As a result of this digitalization effort, it is clear that France is committed to streamlining the visa application process for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, setting the stage for a seamless and efficient experience for all participants.
