More than 20% of Belgians Cannot Afford One-Week Long Holidays

Belgium is known for its stunning medieval towns, world-class chocolates, and delicious beer. However, a recent report from Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, has shed light on a more somber issue affecting the country’s population.

According to the report, nearly 2.5 million Belgians, which accounts for 21.6 percent of the total population, are unable to afford a week-long holiday. This statistic is concerning, especially when considering how important leisure time is for mental health and overall well-being. The issue is even more prevalent in Brussels and the Walloon Region, where nearly a third of the population is affected.

The survey also revealed that the most affected groups within Belgian society are the unemployed, tenants, members of single-parent families, and low-skilled workers. These findings paint a sobering picture of the financial struggles faced by many Belgians.

In addition to the inability to afford a holiday, the survey also uncovered that about 2.5 million Belgians cannot cover an unexpected expense of €1,300. This lack of financial security is most pronounced in Brussels and the Walloon Region, posing a significant challenge for residents in these areas.

Further insights from the survey indicated that a significant portion of the Belgian population is materially and socially deprived. This is evidenced by the fact that many people are unable to replace damaged furniture, regularly engage in leisure activities, or spend a small amount on themselves each week.

Moreover, Statbel’s recent indicator revealed that inflation in Belgium increased from 1.35 percent to 1.75 percent, affecting the cost of goods and services. As prices for certain essential items like dairy products and bread have increased, many Belgians are facing greater financial strain.

These findings highlight the need for greater support and resources to address the financial challenges faced by a significant portion of the Belgian population.
