In 2023, Estonia saw an increase in the number of tourists staying in its accommodation establishments, according to statistics from the country’s official source, Statistics Estonia. The total number of accommodated visitors reached 3.43 million, marking a five per cent increase from the previous year. Of these visitors, 1.67 million were international tourists, while 1.76 million were domestic tourists.
It’s worth noting that while the number of foreign tourists increased by 14%, it has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels. The majority of these international tourists came from Finland and Latvia, with visitors from Latvia increasing by a quarter compared to 2019.
The statistics also reveal that the number of visitors from Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States increased in 2023, albeit remaining lower than in 2019. In December alone, Estonia welcomed 271,000 tourists, an increase of five per cent from the same month in 2022.
These tourists spent a total of 279,000 nights in Estonia, with the majority choosing accommodations in Harju County. In terms of domestic tourists, they spent 210,000 nights in accommodations, with the majority staying in Harju County as well.
The average cost of a guest night in Estonia was 49 euros per person, an increase of three euros compared to the previous month.
In addition to the increase in tourist numbers, Estonia also saw a surge in air passenger arrivals throughout 2023. Tallinn Airport handled the majority of arrivals, reaching 2.96 million passengers, or 7.8 per cent more than in 2022. The other airports in Estonia welcomed the remaining 63,000 passengers.
