Malik Basintale, CEO of the National Youth Employment Agency, is calling on Ghanaian airlines to include local language announcements on all domestic routes.
In a post shared on social media, Basintale praised Africa World Airlines (AWA) for translating in-flight instructions into Twi on a recent flight from Kumasi to Accra. He said the translation was well done and helped passengers who may not fully understand English.
But he also pointed out something missing. On an earlier flight from Tamale to Accra, he noticed there was no announcement in Dagbani, the language spoken by many in the Northern Region.
“I can’t speak for flights from Ho, Takoradi, or Wa,” he wrote, “but I hope similar translations are done in those areas too. Some people genuinely don’t understand the instructions being given.”
He tagged both Africa World Airlines and PassionAir in his post, asking them to consider language needs on all routes.
The suggestion has sparked conversation online, with many agreeing that local language support on flights isn’t just helpful—it’s respectful.
We’ll be watching to see how the airlines respond.
