Italy Extends Border Controls with Slovenia Until June 18th

The border controls between Italy and Slovenia are set to be extended until June 18 this year. The decision comes amid concerns about the potential presence of terrorists hiding among migrants in transit on the EU’s Balkan migratory route.

Both countries had previously committed to restoring free border movement as soon as conditions allow. However, due to the Israel-Hamas war, Italy informed the EU Commission on October 21, 2023, about the reintroduction of internal border controls with Slovenia. This decision was made in response to the threat of violence within the EU following the attack on Israel, the risk of possible terrorist infiltration, and the constant migratory pressure by sea and land.

The initial measure was set to remain effective until October 30, 2023, but has been extended multiple times since then. The recent decision will see the border controls remain in place until June 18, 2024. Similarly, Slovenia has also taken measures to extend border controls with Croatia and Hungary until June 21, 2024, citing threats to public order and internal security in the EU.

According to the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, irregular border crossings last year reached 2016 levels, with a total of 380,000 detections made in the EU’s main migratory routes. The number of irregular border crossings through the Western Balkan route accounted for about 26 per cent of the total, highlighting the significance of this migratory route in the current landscape.

These border control measures have significant implications for travel and migration in the region, and it’s important for travelers to stay informed about any changes in border policies and regulations. As the situation continues to evolve, it’s crucial for travelers to stay updated on the latest developments regarding border controls and travel restrictions. Keep an eye on official sources for the latest information and plan your travel accordingly.
