Jordi Hereu, the Spanish Minister of Industry and Tourism, shared that Turespaña’s projections indicate an anticipated 10.8 percent growth with 23 million visitors expected in the first quarter of 2023.

In addition to the influx of tourists, Spanish authorities are also anticipating generating €30 billion in the first quarter, a growth of 18.5 percent from the same period in 2023. Moreover, 7.4 million seats are planned for international flights to Spain in January, marking a 13 percent increase compared to the same month last year.

Reflecting on the growth, Jordi Hereu emphasized the importance of continuous promotion and support for the tourism sector, calling it “one of the pillars of our economy.” Turespaña invested over 12.5 million euros in advertising and marketing campaigns in 2023 to promote Spanish destinations. Furthermore, the government’s investments, including European funds and the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, exceeded €3.4 billion.

Looking ahead, Minister Hereu highlighted the significance of the upcoming Fitur 2024, the international tourism trade fair scheduled from January 24 to 28 in Madrid. The event will focus on sustainability and accessibility, aligning with the core values of FITUR.

In terms of the tourism sector’s impact in 2023, the Spanish State Museums experienced an 18 percent increase, reaching approximately 2.8 million visitors. Additionally, Aena network airports in Spain observed a significant surge, welcoming 283 million passengers. Of those, over 189.7 million passengers traveled on international flights, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

In summary, Spain has seen remarkable growth in tourism, and the country’s efforts to promote sustainable tourism and accessibility are expected to further contribute to its tourism success.
