Italian airports have set a new record by welcoming 197.2 million passengers last year, a 2.1% increase from the previous record set in 2019. While the post-COVID recovery mainly pointed to the resilience of the domestic market, 2023 is expected to bring about a complete revival for the international segment.

The international sector registered 128 million passengers, a slight increase of 0.1% compared to the year before the pandemic. However, aircraft movements experienced a decline of 2.6% compared to 2019, reaching 1,601,059 units, according to SchengenVisaInfo.com.

In 2023, the sector is expected to leave behind the difficult years of the pandemic, during which the airport system lost at least 280 million passengers, as indicated by data from Assaeroporti.

Rome Fiumicino secured the top spot among Italian airports with 40.5 million passengers in 2023, closely followed by Milan Malpensa, Bergamo, Naples, Venice, and others. The airports of Northern and Central Italy boasted an impressive traffic recovery, while the goods sector suffered a slight decline.

Milan’s Malpensa airport leads Italy in national cargo traffic, handling a commanding share of 65% of the country’s aviation cargo, with Rome Fiumicino and Venice following behind.

The President of Assaeroporti, Carlo Borromeo, emphasized the extraordinary eagerness to travel in 2023, confirming a robust and resilient aviation sector.
