According to the latest World Tourism Barometer from UN Tourism, the global tourism industry triumphantly returned in 2024, with international tourist arrivals reaching 1.4 billion, effectively marking a 99% recovery from pre-pandemic levels. This remarkable achievement highlights the sector’s resilience and adaptability following the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Post-Pandemic Boom Drives Growth

The year 2024 saw an 11% increase in international tourist arrivals compared to 2023, equating to 140 million more travelers. This growth was fueled by robust demand, strong performance in key source markets, and the accelerated recovery of destinations in Asia and the Pacific. Visitor spending also surged, contributing significantly to the global economy.

Regional Highlights

Several regions stood out in their recovery, surpassing pre-pandemic performance:

  • Middle East: The region led the way with 95 million international arrivals, a 32% increase over 2019 and a modest 1% growth compared to 2023.
  • Africa: With 74 million arrivals, the continent recorded a 7% increase over 2019 and a 12% rise from 2023.
  • Europe: The world’s largest tourist destination region welcomed 747 million arrivals, surpassing 2019 levels by 1% and growing by 5% compared to 2023. Southern Mediterranean Europe and Northern Europe were powerful performers.
  • Americas: The region recovered 97% of pre-pandemic arrivals, with the Caribbean and Central America exceeding 2019 figures. Overall, the Americas saw a 7% increase over 2023.
  • Asia and the Pacific: Rapid recovery brought the region to 87% of pre-pandemic levels, significantly improving from 66% at the end of 2023. The region welcomed 316 million international arrivals in 2024, a 33% increase from the previous year.

Top Performing Destinations

Several countries emerged as standout performers in 2024:

  • El Salvador (+81%), Saudi Arabia (+69%), Ethiopia (+40%), Morocco (+35%), and Guatemala (+33%) recorded extraordinary growth compared to pre-pandemic levels.
  • Qatar (+137%), Albania (+80%), Colombia (+37%), and Serbia (+29%) were among the destinations reporting significant increases in arrivals and tourism receipts.

Economic Impact

The financial impact of tourism was equally impressive:

  • International tourism receipts reached USD 1.6 trillion, a 4% increase over 2019 in real terms.
  • Total tourism exports, including passenger transport, reached a record USD 1.9 trillion, a 3% rise from pre-pandemic levels.
  • Average spending per international arrival stabilized at USD 1,100, still above the pre-pandemic average of USD 1,000.

Countries such as Kuwait (+232%), El Salvador (+206%), and Saudi Arabia (+148%) reported exceptional growth in tourism earnings, highlighting their strategic focus on the sector.

Outlook for 2025

The positive momentum is expected to continue in 2025, with international tourist arrivals projected to grow by 3% to 5%. The recovery of Asia and the Pacific, along with strong performance from other regions, is anticipated to drive this growth. However, challenges such as high transportation costs, geopolitical tensions, and extreme weather events remain concerns for the sector.

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili emphasized the need for sustainable growth, stating: “As global tourism continues to recover, we must prioritize people and the planet to ensure long-term success. The sector has a crucial role in socio-economic development and must embrace sustainable practices to thrive in the future.”

Balancing Growth and Sustainability

In 2025, the focus will shift toward balancing growth with sustainability. Key trends include the search for eco-friendly practices and the exploration of lesser-known destinations. Tourists are expected to prioritize value for money, underscoring the importance of offering affordable yet sustainable travel experiences.

As the world enters a new era of travel, 2024 stands as a testament to the resilience and vitality of the global tourism industry, offering hope for continued growth and innovation in the years to come.
