Etihad Airways will begin direct flights between Accra and Abu Dhabi on March 17, 2027, giving Ghanaian travellers a new way to connect to the Middle East, Asia, and other destinations on the airline’s network.

The new route will operate four times a week between Accra International Airport and Abu Dhabi. It is part of Etihad’s broader expansion in Africa, which also includes new routes to Lagos, Harare, Asmara, Kinshasa and Lubumbashi.

For Ghanaian travellers, the Accra route is the key part of the announcement. It adds another direct option from Accra to the Gulf and creates easier one-stop connections to cities in India, China, and other parts of Asia.

The route could also support trade between Ghana and markets beyond the Middle East. Etihad said the expansion is aimed at African markets where demand for passenger travel and cargo services is growing.

Etihad Airways Chief Executive Officer Antonoaldo Neves said Africa is a strong next step for the airline’s expansion. He said demand for flights in several African markets is rising faster than the available supply, especially in cargo and trade-related travel.

The airline believes the new routes will improve movement between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia through Abu Dhabi. For travellers, that means more direct and simpler connections. For businesses, it could mean better access to export and import markets.

Etihad Cargo will also offer belly-hold freight capacity on the new Accra service. This could help businesses that rely on faster shipping for goods moving between Ghana and Asia.

The airline said the Africa expansion also fits into its wider growth in Asia, especially in China and India. With Accra joining the network in 2027, travellers from Ghana will have another international airline to consider for long-haul trips through Abu Dhabi.
