Delta Air Lines is giving $30,000 to each passenger from Monday’s crash landing in Toronto. Everyone on board survived.
The plane landed in Toronto, skidded down the runway in flames, then flipped upside down. Many passengers were shocked to walk away unhurt.
Investigators have not yet determined the cause. The flight carried 76 passengers and four crew from Minneapolis to Toronto.
A Delta spokesperson said the payment comes with no conditions and doesn’t affect passengers’ rights.
Toronto law firm Rochon Genova is representing some passengers and their families. Lawyer Vincent Genova said his clients want a quick and fair resolution, adding that some suffered serious injuries requiring hospital care.
In 2013, Asiana Airlines offered $10,000 to passengers after a San Francisco crash. Last year, Alaska Airlines gave $1,500 to passengers after a mid-air door-plug blowout.
The plane’s crew and emergency responders were praised for quickly evacuating passengers. The aircraft’s safety features also helped prevent loss of life. All 21 passengers taken to the hospital had been released by Thursday morning, Delta said.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian told CBS News the flight crew performed heroically, but as expected, given the airline’s focus on safety. He said Delta continues to support those affected.
Experts analyzing footage suggest that harsh winter weather and a fast descent may have played a role in the crash. Passengers described the impact as intense, with one saying they were left hanging upside down “like bats.”
The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder have been recovered. Canada’s Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation with U.S. support.
This was the fourth major air incident in three weeks. A day later, two people died in an Arizona plane crash. Despite the incidents, experts say flying is still one of the safest ways to travel.
