Aena airports also saw a rise in aircraft movements, with 2.4 million recorded in 2023, an 8.5% increase from 2022. Additionally, the transportation of 1.07 million tonnes of freight marked a 7.9% increase from the previous year.

The busiest airports in the network based on aircraft movements and passenger traffic include Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Palma de Mallorca, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Gran Canaria, Tenerife Sur, and Valencia.

Aena’s Chairman and CEO, Maurici Lucena, stressed the importance of these figures for Spain’s economic and social development, while also acknowledging the resilience of the air transport industry in the face of the pandemic.

Despite the unprecedented growth in passenger traffic, Aena reported increased net profits throughout 2023. The network manages 46 airports and two heliports in Spain, as well as 23 airports in Brazil, Mexico, Jamaica, and Colombia, in addition to London-Luton Airport. This data underscores the positive trajectory for Spain’s Aena network and the potential for continued growth in the coming years.
