Understanding Siplagging

Skiplagging, also known as hidden city ticketing, is a travel hack in which a passenger intentionally books a connecting flight with the intention of getting off at the layover destination instead of continuing to the final stop. This practice is often used by travelers to save money on airfare, but it is also a controversial practice that has led to some major airlines banning the practice altogether.

United Airlines

United Airlines has a strict policy against skiplagging and has been known to take action against passengers who are found to have engaged in this practice. The airline has the right to cancel the remaining segments of a passenger’s itinerary and even revoke their frequent flyer miles if they are found to have violated its skiplagging policy.

Lufthansa

Lufthansa is another airline that has publicly denounced skiplagging and warns passengers that it may take action against those who engage in the practice. The airline reserves the right to pursue legal action against passengers who violate its skiplagging policy.

American Airlines

American Airlines has also taken a strong stance against skiplagging and has the right to cancel a passenger’s remaining itinerary if they are found to have engaged in the practice. The airline may also revoke a passenger’s frequent flyer miles if they have violated its skiplagging policy.

Why Do Airlines Ban Skiplagging?

Airlines ban skiplagging for a variety of reasons. Firstly, it disrupts the airlines’ revenue management systems and can result in lost revenue for the carrier. Additionally, skiplagging can also cause operational issues and disrupt flight schedules. Furthermore, airlines argue that skiplagging is a form of fare abuse that ultimately harms the industry as a whole.

Consequences of Skiplagging

Passengers who are caught skiplagging may face a range of consequences, including the cancellation of their remaining itinerary, the revocation of frequent flyer miles, and even legal action in some cases. Travelers need to be aware of the potential risks and consequences associated with skiplagging before engaging in this practice.
