What are the residency requirements for Canadian citizenship?

When you become a permanent resident (PR) of Canada, it is important to meet the residency requirement to maintain your PR status. This requirement means that you must reside in Canada for a minimum of 730 days over the last five years. The 730 days do not need to be continuous, but it is essential to ensure that you meet this requirement to avoid losing your PR status.

In some cases, time spent outside of Canada may count towards the 730-day residency requirement for Canadian PRs. This may apply to PRs who work outside of Canada for a Canadian business, government, or organization, or travel abroad with their spouse or dependent children who are PRs in Canada.

There is no residency requirement for Canadian citizenship, so once you become a citizen, you have the freedom to travel abroad for as long as you would like without fear of losing your citizenship.

It is important to note that there are three reasons that a Canadian can have their citizenship revoked, including misrepresentation, fraud, and knowingly concealing material circumstances.

As a PR in Canada, your PR card is proof that you have obtained PR status. It is essential to have when traveling outside of Canada and returning. Additionally, there are certain jobs that you are not eligible for as a PR, and you cannot vote or run for political office in Canada. However, there are many benefits to being a PR, including access to social benefits, the ability to live and work anywhere in Canada, and eligibility to apply for Canadian citizenship.

There are four primary reasons that a PR may lose their status in Canada, including an official status decision being passed down by IRCC, voluntarily renouncing PR status, becoming the subject of an enforced removal order, or becoming a Canadian citizen. It is also important to remember that PRs do not lose their status if their PR card expires.
