Aachen is a city in Germany that sits on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium. It is famous for its historical significance, having been a prominent city in medieval times and serving as the capital of the Roman Empire. Aachen was also home to many kings.

The city became important to the Romans due to its natural beauty and hot springs rich in sulfur and sodium, which provide health benefits. The city’s historical influence grew when the Franks invaded guided by Charlemagne, who settled in Aachen permanently. Charlemagne constructed an old Baroque style Palatine Chapel where he handled religious, political, and administrative affairs, and King Otto was also crowned in Aachen. In total, 30 generations of German kings were crowned in the chapel.

The city is full of history, with well-preserved ancient architecture, old walls and buildings in the old Byzantine and Roman styles, charming churches, fountains, alleys, and historical museums.

The city suffered significant destruction during World War II, but its gateways, monuments, medieval walls, and fountains were repaired to keep the historical perspective of the city alive.

Geographical Importance of Aachen City

Aachen’s geographical position is perfect for communication with other cities in Europe, with a cross-frontier industrial zone known as Avantis located between Heerlen and Aachen, providing its inhabitants with prosperous activities.

Aachen has become a high-tech city, known for engineering and mechanical businesses, with companies like Philips, Ford Research Center, and Continental AG operating in the area.

Eifel Volcanic Territory Landscapes in Aachen City

The city is famous for its landscapes, including the Eifel volcanic territory with Hohes Venn, the highest peak in the city, providing nature lovers with hiking activities.

Theatres, Museums, and Activities in Aachen City

Aachen offers different theaters such as Grenzland and Municipal Theatre, along with international artists displaying their work in various museums and galleries throughout the city. The city also hosts a variety of fun activities, including the Carnival ‘Wilder den Tierischen Ernst,’ cultural summer events, charming Christmas markets, International Show Jumping Championships, and the Rur Lake in flames.

Additionally, Aachen city attracts people because of its old stories and history. The city’s tradition and legacy have been well preserved by the government to continue attracting tourists from all over the world.
