Germany’s Opportunity Card, also known as the Chancenkarte, provides a gateway for skilled workers from non-EU countries to enter Germany in search of employment. One crucial aspect of the application process for the Opportunity Card is proving that you have sufficient financial means to support yourself during your job search. This article outlines the financial requirements you must meet to be eligible for the Germany Opportunity Card.

Chancenkarte Financial Requirements

To qualify for the Opportunity Card, you must demonstrate that you have enough financial resources to cover your living expenses in Germany. Specifically, you need to show that you have at least €1,027 per month available to you, which amounts to a total of €12,324 for the year. Additionally, you must have sufficient funds to cover the cost of a return ticket to your home country.

Demonstrating Financial Means

There are three primary ways to prove that you have the necessary financial means:

  1. Blocked Account
  2. Declaration of Financial Commitment
  3. Secondary Employment

1. Blocked Account

A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a special type of bank account in Germany where you deposit the required amount of money before your arrival. The minimum amount to be deposited for the Opportunity Card is €12,324, equivalent to €1,027 per month. This account ensures that you can withdraw a fixed monthly amount, ensuring you have steady financial support during your stay. The blocked account option is straightforward and widely used by international students and job seekers alike.

2. Declaration of Financial Commitment

The most trusted method to prove your financial capability is through a declaration of financial commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a sponsor. This involves a legal resident in Germany signing a declaration that they will cover your living expenses, accommodation, and medical care during your stay. This document minimizes financial risks for the German state and guarantees that your basic needs will be met.

To obtain this document, your sponsor must visit the local immigration office in Germany. The office will provide the requirements and, once completed, your sponsor will send you the document to include in your application. This option is particularly advantageous if you have family or close friends residing in Germany who are willing to support you.

3. Secondary Employment

If you lack a sponsor and sufficient funds to open a blocked account, you can secure your financial proof through pre-arranged employment in Germany. This employment should be for up to 20 hours per week. An employment contract demonstrating that you have a job to begin work as soon as you arrive in Germany negates the need for further proof of funding. This option is ideal for those who can secure a part-time job in advance, ensuring they have an income stream upon arrival.

Meeting the financial requirements is a major hurdle in the application process for Germany’s Opportunity Card. Whether through a blocked account, a declaration of financial commitment, or pre-arranged employment, proving your financial stability ensures that you can focus on your job search without worrying about basic living expenses.
