If you have a bachelor’s degree and the required flying qualifications, along with flying experience after the age of 23, with proper medical and security clearance, then you are on your way to becoming an airline pilot. In this article, we will explore the 7 simple steps to become a commercial airline pilot in 2023.

Step 1: Obtain a Private Pilot License

In the USA and other countries, it’s a basic requirement for all trainee pilots to receive their private pilot certificate by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This will authorize you to fly a single-engine aircraft to learn and study flying while recording your total flying hours for experience. This will give you a solid foundation on your journey to becoming a commercial airline pilot.

Step 2: Learn Aircraft Instrument Rating

After obtaining your private pilot license, the next step is to study aviation/aircraft instrument rating. This will make you proficient in flying under instrument flight rules (IFR) and enable you to fly under any weather conditions.

Step 3: Obtain Commercial Pilot Certification

To become a commercial pilot, you will need to have a commercial pilot certificate. This requires completing 100 hours of pilot in command training, 250 hours of flight time, 50 hours of cross-country flying time, 100 hours of powered aircraft flying experience, and more.

Step 4: Apply for Flight Instructor Certificate

After you become a commercial pilot, the next step is to apply for a flight instructor certificate. This will allow you to fly aircraft for earning money and become employed in this profession with airlines.

Step 5: Add Multi-Engine Rating

To apply for a job as a pilot at commercial airlines, you will need to add a multi-engine rating to your previously obtained commercial pilot license.

Step 6: Get Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate and Flying Experience

As a commercial pilot, you will be required to have at least 1500 hours of total flight time experience to qualify for Airline Transport Pilot (ATP). Once you meet the experience requirements, you will stand eligible to appear for job interviews as a flight officer at any airline.

Step 7: Start Your Job as a Commercial Pilot

After completing the necessary certifications and flight experience, you can work as a commercial pilot at any airline. Some airlines may require you to participate in their own cadet programs before flying their specified fleet.

Becoming a commercial airline pilot is an exciting and rewarding career. Following these 7 simple steps can set you on the path to achieving your dream of becoming an airline pilot in 2023. And with the growing demand for pilots worldwide, this profession promises high earning potential for those who pursue it.
