Denmark is open for skilled and qualified professionals from overseas as it faces challenges in filling skill gaps in multiple industries. The country has loosened its immigration rules, including lowering the minimum salary requirements, to attract international talent. Foreign nationals earning at least DKK 375,000 (€50,344) can now apply for work and residence permits, compared to the previous minimum salary of DKK 465,000 (€62,434).

In 2024, Denmark offers a lucrative job market for skilled foreign workers due to a labor shortage in sectors like science, engineering, healthcare, and IT. Benefits for skilled worker visa holders include a dynamic labor market, comprehensive social security, and family-oriented benefits. Various visa categories are available, targeting different professional needs and fostering an environment conducive to economic development and innovation.

The list of skill shortage occupations in Denmark, particularly those that employ skilled workers, is derived from the Labour Market Balance and is updated half-yearly. For a comprehensive and current overview of the skill shortage occupations in Denmark, it is recommended to refer directly to the Labour Market Balance Positive list on the Work in Denmark website.

Denmark offers various types of work visas for skilled workers from abroad, each designed to meet specific requirements and cater to different professional needs. These include the Positive List Scheme, Fast Track Scheme, Pay Limit Scheme, and General Work Permit, as well as non-employment based options such as the Jobseeker Permit, Student Residence Permit, and Startup Denmark Visa.

The application fees for several employment-based Denmark work visas and permits are set at DKK 4,405 (€590). For non-employment-based options, the fees vary, with additional fees for biometrics and translation of documents.

To apply for Denmark’s employment-based visa programs, individuals should select the appropriate program based on their profession, understand the eligibility requirements, compile necessary documents, submit the application, pay application fees, attend biometrics appointment if required, await processing and decision, and finally collect the visa or residence permit upon approval.
