If you want to study in Germany, having sufficient English or German language skills is necessary. Language proficiency is crucial for successful academic studies, as most courses in German universities are delivered in German. Understanding the German language will also provide insight into the rich history and cultural values of Germany.

However, some German institutions that offer international courses teach in English, requiring international students to have a strong command of the English language. Some courses may be delivered in both German and English, making it important for students to have proficiency in both languages.

This is why German universities require language proficiency proof from international students in the form of standardized language test certificates. Whether you aim to apply for a German Scholarship or seek admission into a German University, having English or German language proficiency certificates is essential.

To gain admission to a German University, you must meet specific language requirements based on your level of study. For undergraduate studies in Germany, a DSH II or C1 CEFR level skill is required if the course lectures are delivered in German. For master’s programs, a minimum of DSH II or DSH I level skill is necessary. Pursuing a Ph.D. program does not have specific German language skill requirements, but the language skills needed depend on the university.

German universities recognize various certificates for C1 CEFR level German proficiency. Certificates such as DSH, TestDaF, GDS, and Education Ministers’ Conference language certificate are accepted.

For DSH I Level, certificates such as TestDaF, GDS, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, UNIcert III, and Education Ministers’ Conference certificate of language are recognized.

In addition to German language certificates, German universities accept foreign language educational certificates, such as the French Diplôme Du Baccalauréat and AP Exam in German, among others.

For international courses, proficiency in English is also required. English language proficiency certificates from English medium schools, IELTS, Cambridge English Certificates, TOEIC, and TOEFL scores are recognized by German universities.

Gaining language proficiency for admission to a German University involves choosing the right language test and preparing accordingly. Whether it is mastering the German language or honing your English language skills, achieving proficiency in the required language is vital for pursuing academic studies in Germany.
