Akwaaba vs. Oobake: The Fight Over a Single Word of Welcome

August 28, 2025

Unless otherwise indicated, all aerodrome airports in Ghana are managed and maintained by Ghana Airports Company Limited and it is solely responsible for the managing, developing, planning and maintaining them.

Kotoka International Airport

This is the premiere and leading international airport in Ghana operated by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GAGL).  It was formerly known as the Ghana International Airport but was renamed to Kotoka International Airport in honour of the late Lieutenant General Kwasi Kotoka.

It is by far the largest airport in the country and has one of the best passenger terminal meant to serve several passengers.

The airport has 3 terminals: Terminal one and two are meant to serve regional and domestic operators, terminal three has a large commercial retail area and six boarding bridges to serve international and long-haul operators.

Flights from this airport connect to many places in the world.

Kumasi International Airport

This is one of the most vibrant airports in the country. It was built to transport travelers travel from the Ashanti region of Ghana to other regions with ease. It is located in Kumasi as the name suggests.

The Kumasi International Airport although built as a domestic one, was scheduled to undergo maintenance in 2018 to be upgraded into an international airport. (The airport already has INTERNATIONAL in its name).

It is the second largest international airport after Kotoka International Airport.

Sunyani Airport

The Sunyani Airport was built to cater for the travelling needs of the people of Sunyani and Ghana at large. It is located in Sunyani, the capital region of Brong Ahafo.

The airport is currently undergoing a renovation and rehabilitation process. The government of Ghana has assured the residents of Sunyani that the airport will be reopened soon for operations to resume.

 Tamale Airport

This was built to facilitate air travel for the people of Tamale. It serves domestic transport needs for travelers connecting mainly from Accra. Road transport from the capital stressed travelers and the airport came to facilitate travels from Accra.

Takoradi Airport

This Airport is located in the capital city of the Western region of Ghana, Takoradi. The oil discovery in the Western Region has also increased tourist arrivals in the regional capital.

Wa Airport

The Wa airport is located in Wa. The airstrip was recently undergoing renovation. Work included the rehabilitation of an existing structure into a terminal building and the construction of a perimeter fence around the airport

Yendi Airport

Yendi Airport is an airport serving the people of Yendi, a town in the Northern Region of Ghana. This isn’t a popular airport and many stakeholders don’t even know the existence of this airstrip.

Ho Airport

This is the latest airport built in Ghana. It was completed in 2018 by the Government of Ghana to enable the people of Ho and Volta Region as a whole to connect to other regions.

Although fully built and not officially operating, the government is making plans of commercializing the airport soon.
