The reserve is found near Nkwanta in the Nkwanta South District of the region, and lies between the Savannah and tropical rain forest. Originally, the reserve was established in 1993 in a bid to help keep wildlife and other rare animal species safe as well as providing a comfortable home for them, far from human activities and danger. However since then, the boundaries of the park have been adjusted several times.
