Sri Lanka has been named the best island in the world for 2026 by travel platform Big 7 Travel, which placed the South Asian destination at the top of its “50 Best Islands in the World 2026” ranking.
The recognition highlights Sri Lanka’s mix of beaches, wildlife, culture, tea-growing highlands and historic attractions.
Among the features cited were the country’s coastline, which stretches for about 1,340 kilometres, its famous tea plantations, the wildlife-rich Yala National Park and Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
To promote the destination, Sri Lanka Tourism will hold a three-day travel event in Frankfurt, Germany, from July 30 to August 1, 2026.
The event, titled “Your Next Journey: Sri Lanka,” will take place at the Main-Taunus-Zentrum. Visitors will be able to watch traditional dance and cultural performances, receive travel advice and learn more about holiday experiences available across the island.
Sri Lanka is also recording stronger interest from German travellers.
A total of 147,966 visitors from Germany travelled to Sri Lanka in 2025, representing an increase of 8.7 per cent compared with the previous year.
The country welcomed a record 2,362,521 international visitors in 2025. The Sri Lankan government expects arrivals to reach three million for the first time in 2026.
Authorities have also introduced measures aimed at making travel easier. Tourists from about 40 countries are now eligible for free tourist visas.
Air access from Germany has also improved. Since May 2026, SriLankan Airlines has operated direct services from the new Terminal 3 at Frankfurt Airport to Colombo.
Sri Lanka offers visitors a wide range of experiences within a relatively small area. Travellers can begin the day on a palm-lined beach, explore tea plantations in the central highlands and later join a safari in search of elephants and leopards.
The Frankfurt event will run from Thursday, July 30, to Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Main-Taunus-Zentrum.
