The allure of Canada as a prime destination for Nigerians seeking temporary residency has shown a significant upward trend over the past four years, according to recent data published by the Government of Canada. This data, detailing the number of new applications and extensions processed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) from January 2021 to April 2024, highlights a dramatic increase in interest from Nigerian citizens.

In 2021, Canada received 53,546 applications from Nigerians seeking various forms of temporary residency, ranging from Temporary Resident Visas and Visitor Records to Study and Work Permits and their respective extensions. Of these applications, 32,299 were approved, representing an approval rate of approximately 60.3%.

The following year saw an almost twofold increase in applications, with 99,950 submissions recorded in 2022. Despite the surge in applications, the approval rate saw a slight dip, with 54,521 approvals accounting for around 54.6% of the applications.

Rising applications continued unabated into 2023, with a substantial leap to 326,006. However, the number of approvals, though increased to 154,989, showed a further decline in the approval rate to roughly 47.5%. This significant rise in application numbers shows the growing interest among Nigerians to explore opportunities in Canada.

As of the first four months of 2024, the momentum has continued with 125,726 applications already processed, out of which 47,977 have been approved. This preliminary data suggests an approval rate of about 38.1%, indicating a tightening in the approval process despite the steady influx of applications.

This four-year span has revealed an impressive growth trajectory in the number of Nigerians applying for temporary residency in Canada. Several factors might be driving this trend, including Canada’s reputation for high-quality education, robust employment opportunities, and a welcoming multicultural environment.

However, the declining approval rates over the years suggest that while interest remains high, meeting the eligibility criteria for temporary residency is becoming increasingly stringent. This could be due to a combination of more rigorous vetting processes, increased competition, and possibly changes in immigration policies aimed at balancing the inflow of temporary residents with Canada’s socio-economic needs.
