The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core is now accepted by IRCC for all immigration programs that require a language test, with the exception of the Student Direct Stream. This makes PTE Core the third option for an English language test that candidates can take for their permanent residency application, in addition to the CELPIP General Test and the IELTS General Training.
For French language tests to obtain the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score, candidates can take the TEF Canada: Test d’évaluation de français and the TCF Canada: Test de connaissance du français.
Each accepted language test uses a different scoring system that generates an equivalent score to the CLB. The CLB is used by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to evaluate the language abilities of candidates in skilled worker immigration programs.
The PTE Core, CELPIP, and IELTS tests each have their unique scoring system and test format. PTE Core is marked entirely by scoring technology and is a computer-based test that takes approximately two hours to complete. The CELPIP test is also computer-based and takes around three hours, and IELTS tests can be completed on a computer or on paper, taking approximately two hours and 45 minutes.
For candidates applying for Express Entry, the CLB minimum score requirement differs between programs. Candidates in the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) must have a minimum CLB of 7 in each of the four categories, while those in the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) require a CLB 7 if their occupation falls under a National Occupation Classification (NOC) TEER of 0 or 1. Candidates applying for Express Entry through the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) require a minimum CLB level of 5 for speaking and listening, and a level 4 for reading and writing.
Overall, the acceptance of the PTE Core as an English language test for Canadian immigration programs provides candidates with more options and flexibility in meeting the language requirement for their application.
