For many newcomers arriving in Canada, their vision of the future includes one important experience: the day of their citizens ceremony. In 2021, about 80% of eligible Canadian permanent residents chose to pursue citizenship and attended a citizenship ceremony to formalize their new status. These ceremonies are momentous occasions that happen daily in Canada, marking an individual’s commitment to their new home nation and the nation’s commitment to them in return.

Citizenship ceremonies have evolved since the introduction of online provisions, providing new Canadians with various types of ceremonies to participate in. The different types of citizenship ceremonies available are standard ceremonies, enhanced ceremonies, private ceremonies, and reaffirmation ceremonies.

During a citizenship ceremony, participants will take the Oath of Citizenship, receive their citizenship certificate, sign the Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship form, and sing the national anthem. The ceremony is presided over by a citizenship judge or official who leads the Oath of Citizenship. Individuals can choose to swear or affirm the oath of citizenship, and once they take the Oath, they officially become Canadian citizens. Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will provide a citizenship certificate as proof of Canadian citizenship status.

A standard in-person ceremony can take place at an IRCC office, an alternate location, or online using video conference meeting software. Additionally, extra elements such as the participation of children, special speaking points by the presiding official, the presence of elected officials, indigenous guest speakers, and more can be included.

Enhanced ceremonies are those that include additional elements such as external partners or host organizations, high-ranking officials, special guest appearances, and a reception for in-person ceremonies.

Private ceremonies are closed to the public and can be conducted in specific situations, including special grants, terminally ill candidates, and urgent or extenuating circumstances.

Reaffirmation ceremonies are official occasions where patriotic Canadians recite the citizenship oath to express their dedication to Canada. These ceremonies can be arranged in communities, workplaces, or educational institutions.

With the different kinds of citizenship ceremonies available, new Canadians have the opportunity to celebrate their commitment to their new home country in a way that reflects their unique circumstances.
