Spain’s Aena network of airports has seen a significant increase in passenger traffic, surpassing 2019 levels. This is great news for the country’s air transport industry and the overall economy.
In 2023, more than 283 million passengers travelled through the 46 airports in the Aena network, marking a 16.2% increase compared to 2022 and a 2.9% increase from 2019. Of these passengers, 282.3 million were commercial, with over 189.7 million on international flights and 92.6 million on domestic flights.
Aena airports also saw a rise in aircraft movements, with 2.4 million recorded in 2023, an 8.5% increase from 2022. Additionally, the transportation of 1.07 million tonnes of freight marked a 7.9% increase from the previous year.
The busiest airports in the network based on aircraft movements and passenger traffic include Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Palma de Mallorca, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Gran Canaria, Tenerife Sur, and Valencia.
Aena’s Chairman and CEO, Maurici Lucena, stressed the importance of these figures for Spain’s economic and social development, while also acknowledging the resilience of the air transport industry in the face of the pandemic.
Despite the unprecedented growth in passenger traffic, Aena reported increased net profits throughout 2023. The network manages 46 airports and two heliports in Spain, as well as 23 airports in Brazil, Mexico, Jamaica, and Colombia, in addition to London-Luton Airport. This data underscores the positive trajectory for Spain’s Aena network and the potential for continued growth in the coming years.
