Last week, five of Canada’s provinces extended invites for applications for provincial immigration programs through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Receiving a PNP nomination helps to strengthen an application for permanent residence through Immigration Citizenship and Refugees Canada (IRCC).

The PNP has different pathways that candidates may be eligible for depending on their attributes. These pathways are open to international student graduates or candidates who already have a job offer in Canada. Provinces nominate and select a specific number of economic immigrants each year, as they share responsibility for immigration in Canada with IRCC.

The exception to participation in the PNP include Quebec and Nunavut. These two locations have separate agreements with the federal government. The overall target for PNP permanent resident admissions is set out in the annual Immigration Levels Plan. In 2024, Canada will admit 110,000 newcomers through the PNP and 120,000 each year in 2024 and 2025. The provinces are then divided among the provinces based on population and economic need.

Ontario invited 2,359 candidates last week. The province targeted candidates in the tech industry but the specific occupation was cybersecurity specialists. British Columbia invited over 192 candidates through five draws within the BC PNP, with a focus on specific occupations such as construction.

In Quebec, the province invited 1,187 people to apply for permanent selection. In Manitoba, 160 Skilled Workers in Manitoba were invited, while in Alberta, the province extended an invite to 19 Express Entry candidates who met the criteria of the Dedicated Healthcare Pathway. The province estimates a processing time for applications will be up to three months.
