Have you ever had your job application rejected because of your nationality, despite having the necessary qualifications and work experience? It’s a harsh reality in the United Kingdom, where nationality can be a decisive factor in employment.

The answer is simple. Foreigners are indeed allowed to work for the UK civil service in various non-reserved quota employment opportunities. This may come as a surprise to many, but it’s a fact. Research has been done to verify this information and now we have the facts to share with you.

For Irish readers and dual nationals with UK nationality, the good news is that you are eligible to work for the British government, subject to fulfilling the UK civil service job criteria and nationality requirements from a UK-friendly country.

Swiss citizens are also accepted to work for the UK civil service, while Turkish citizens have certain limitations due to the European Community Association Agreement (ECAA), which requires a period of residency and work history in the UK.

If your country is a member of the Commonwealth or falls under the EEA countries list, then you may also be eligible for non-reserved UK government jobs advertised by the UK civil service department. However, it is essential to meet all UK work visa and immigration requirements, including English language proficiency.

Asylum seekers in the UK can work for UK civil service jobs in the shortage occupation list (SOL). A British home office registration card is a mandatory requirement for all asylum seekers applying for civil service jobs in the UK.

For British nationals born abroad with a UK passport confirming British citizenship, it is necessary to obtain attestation from the UK home office before applying for UK civil service jobs.
