What is considered an overnight layover?

An overnight layover is when a passenger has to spend the night at a layover location before continuing their journey to their final destination. This can occur when a connecting flight is scheduled for the next day or when there are limited flight options available.

Duration

There is no set time frame that defines an overnight layover, but it is generally considered to be when the layover lasts for more than 8 hours and extends into the evening and early morning hours.

Accommodations

Many airlines will provide accommodations for passengers who have overnight layovers, such as a hotel room and meal vouchers. However, this is not always the case, especially if the passenger is responsible for the extended layover due to their choice of flight itinerary.

Who pays for overnight layover?

Whether or not the airline covers the cost of accommodations for an overnight layover largely depends on the reason for the layover and the airline’s policies. If the layover is due to a scheduling issue or a missed connection that was the airline’s fault, they will typically provide accommodations. However, if the passenger chose a longer layover to save money on their ticket, they may be responsible for their own accommodations.

Passenger responsibility

If the passenger has a long layover by choice, they will likely be responsible for their own accommodations during the layover. It’s important for travelers to carefully consider their flight itineraries and the potential for layovers before booking their tickets to avoid unexpected expenses.

Airline responsibility

If the layover is a result of a missed connection, flight delay, or scheduling issue that is the airline’s fault, they will typically provide accommodations for the passenger. This may include a hotel room, meal vouchers, and transportation to and from the airport.

An overnight layover occurs when a passenger has to spend the night at a layover location before continuing their journey. Whether the airline or the passenger is responsible for the cost of accommodations during the layover depends on the reason for the layover and the airline’s policies.
