Rainforests

Rainforests receive rainfall directly from the atmosphere without a significant reliance on cloud interception.

Cloud Forests

Cloud forests, on the other hand, exhibit a unique phenomenon known as lateral cloud filtration. Here, a substantial portion of precipitation originates from the clouds themselves.

Tree crowns intercept clouds, causing moisture to drip down in a captivating dance known as fog drip. This lateral cloud filtration contributes to the hydrologic cycle, adding to the mystique of these elevated landscapes.

Altitude and Canopy Cover

Rainforests

Rainforests, predominantly thrive at lower elevations, often ranging from sea level to around 500 meters.

These ecosystems showcase a towering canopy and an intricate web of vegetation that flourishes under the warmth of tropical climates.

Cloud Forests

Cloud forests, in contrast, carve their niche at higher altitudes, extending from 500 meters to 4000 meters above sea level.

The defining feature is the persistent, frequent, or seasonal low-level cloud cover, usually gracing the canopy.

This cloud veil not only reduces direct sunlight but also contributes to the cool, moist ambiance characterizing cloud forests.

Biodiversity and Species Composition

Rainforests

The tapestry of a rainforest is adorned with towering trees, showcasing impressive heights and a lush understorey.

Species diversity thrives across various elevations, creating a dynamic and complex ecosystem.

Cloud Forests

In cloud forests, trees exhibit a different stature, generally shorter and more heavily stemmed compared to their rainforest counterparts.

The reduced stature is an adaptation to the challenging conditions of higher elevations. The species composition in cloud forests reflects a unique blend of plants adapted to the cool, misty environment.
