This intriguing name is believed to have originated from a bridge constructed by John Turnbull Thomson over the Kallang River.

The bridge was situated near the present junction of Upper Thomson Road and Ang Mo Kio Avenue.

Historical Significance and Rubber Boom

Throughout the 19th century, Ang Mo Kio remained largely uninhabited. It gained traction around the turn of the century when settlers were drawn to the area due to the rubber boom.

Old maps of Singapore reveal that much of the land now known as Ang Mo Kio was once labeled as Ang Mo Kio Forest Reserve, featuring numerous plantation estates.

The development of Ang Mo Kio New Town commenced in 1973 and was successfully completed in 1980.

Amenities

Ang Mo Kio stands as a vibrant heartland town, boasting an array of amenities that enhance the quality of life for its residents.

Schools, healthcare facilities, and the expansive Ang Mo Kio Hub, a large suburban shopping mall, contribute to the town’s allure.

As part of Singapore’s green initiative, Ang Mo Kio features well-designed parks like Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East and Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West.

Award-Winning Design

The design of Ang Mo Kio has not gone unnoticed. It clinched the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) Outstanding Buildings Award in 1983.

Particularly noteworthy is the swimming complex in Ang Mo Kio, celebrated for its unique design, characterized by a wave-shaped roof that adds a touch of architectural brilliance to the town.

Community and Culture

Beyond its physical attributes, Ang Mo Kio nurtures a sense of community and culture. The town is a testament to Singapore’s commitment to creating inclusive spaces that cater to diverse needs and interests.

In essence, Ang Mo Kio’s fame goes beyond being a residential area; it encapsulates a rich history, thoughtful urban planning, and a vibrant community spirit.

The distinctive name, historical significance, well-designed amenities, and award-winning architecture collectively contribute to the charm and allure of Ang Mo Kio, making it a noteworthy destination within the dynamic landscape of Singapore.
