The list is formally updated annually and it’s divided into three sections. If an employer is having problem getting suitable New Zealander to fill a position on one of the lists, a visa can be granted to a qualified worker from overseas.

Over the years, one of the notable professions which make the list every year is teaching, as the country continues to face a shortage of teachers especially those in the early childhood and basic education field. While the government has made conscious effort to produce teachers for the sector, the numbers is simply not enough meaning the state has to resort to foreign professionals to fill the gap in the sector, making it relatively easier for teachers to secure visas to New Zealand.

Foreign teachers who seek to apply for visas must, however, come from countries that have a similar education system or qualification to that of New Zealand such as South Africa, Canada, UK, Ireland and Fiji.

Below are the jobs which featured on the 2019 ESID List, in other words, jobs which are currently in high demand in New Zealand.

Electric Line Mechanic

Electrician (General)

Diesel Motor Mechanic (including Heavy Vehicle Inspector)

Automotive Electrician

Food Technologist

Environmental Research Scientist

Chef (Chef de Partie or higher)

Multimedia Specialist (Film Animator)

Registered Nurse (Aged Care)
