The Wa Airport is the second domestic airport built in the Northern part of Ghana with Tamale Airport being the first. It officially commenced commercial operations in October 2019 with Africa World Airlines being the first airline to officially fly passengers to the airport from the national capital, Accra with fifty passengers on board.
While the official commencement of operations was in October 2019, the land for the airport was acquired by the Government of Ghana as far back as 1958 with the intent of giving the people an airport as early as possible, however, that dream did not materialize at the time.
It must, however, be noted that before the airport commenced commercial operations in 2019, the airport was very much in use but not for commercial activities but instead it served as an aviation aircraft traffic control point.
The facility belongs to the Government of Ghana and is managed on their behalf by the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), the state institution responsible for managing airports.
Currently, Africa World Airline (AWA) is the only domestic airline that flies to Wa.
