Virgin Atlantic has announced plans to resume its service to Accra, Ghana, beginning May 1, 2025, marking the airline’s return to the West African nation after a 12-year hiatus. The new route is part of Virgin Atlantic’s broader expansion strategy, which includes launching flights to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Toronto, Canada.
Starting from May 1, 2025, Virgin Atlantic will offer daily flights from London’s Heathrow Airport to Kotoka International Airport in Accra. These flights will be operated using the airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a state-of-the-art aircraft known for its fuel efficiency and passenger comfort.
The decision to reintroduce flights to Accra is a response to the significant demand from the Ghanaian diaspora in the UK. With the UK hosting the third-largest Ghanaian diaspora globally, Virgin Atlantic aims to facilitate connections between friends, families, and businesses. The airline estimates that around 10% of passengers on the Accra route will likely connect onward to Virgin Atlantic’s popular New York JFK service.
Juha Jarvinen, Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Atlantic, expressed enthusiasm about the new route, highlighting the opportunity to connect more people and strengthen ties between the UK and Ghana. “We’re excited to bring our iconic, inclusive Virgin Atlantic brand back to Ghana, offering our award-winning service to both new and returning customers,” Jarvinen said.
The reintroduction of Virgin Atlantic flights to Accra is seen as a significant boost for Ghana’s aviation and tourism sectors. The direct link to London will enhance accessibility for international travelers and further cement Accra’s position as a key hub in West Africa.
The announcement has been met with positive reactions from the Ghanaian community, both in the UK and in Ghana, as it provides a new, high-quality option for travel between the two countries.
Tickets for the new Accra route will go on sale starting September 12, 2024.
