Vienna Airport (VIE) saw a significant increase in passenger traffic in 2023, with 29.5 million travellers passing through the airport, marking a nearly 25 per cent increase compared to the previous year. This also represented a 93.3 per cent of the levels recorded in 2019, the pre-pandemic year.
In December alone, VIE welcomed around 2.2 million passengers, representing a nearly 14 per cent increase compared to the same month in 2022. The most popular vacation destinations for flights from Vienna Airport were Antalya, Mallorca, and Barcelona, with Bangkok, New York, and Taipei among the favorite long-haul destinations.
Spain, Germany, and Italy were the top three country destinations from VIE, with Italy, Greece, and Turkey experiencing the highest increase in passenger numbers in 2023 compared to 2019.
According to Julian Jäger, a management board member of Flughafen Wien AG, 2023 was the second-best year in Vienna Airport history regarding passenger traffic. He attributed this to the strong desire to travel that emerged after the pandemic and served as the basis for a substantial upswing in passenger volume at Vienna Airport.
Jäger further noted that VIE ranks as Lufthansa Group’s most punctual hub, the third most punctual in Europe, and holds 11th among over 500 airports in Skytrax’s world’s best airports ratings. He also mentioned the new Terminal 3 Southern Expansion, which will be operational in 2027 and is expected to help VIE become one of the world’s top airports.
The airport company forecasts the number of passengers to reach about 30 million this year, with higher revenues and increased investments in the airport. Günther Ofner, another management board member of the company, said investments in the airport will double, surpassing €200 million, creating at least 700 new jobs at the site.
In July 2023, Flughafen Wien AG, including Vienna, Malta, and Kosice airports, recorded 4.1 million passengers, surpassing 2019 levels by nearly 15 per cent, while 3.14 million of those passengers traveled through Vienna Airport, representing a 13.4 per cent rise compared to the same month last year and only 0.5 per cent below 2019 levels.
