Visa restrictions have been placed on Ghana by the United States on some categories due to the failure of bilateral efforts to have Ghanaian Embassy in Washington and Foreign Affairs Ministry in Ghana to issue passports for Ghanaians who were subject to deportation orders within 30 days, in line with the UN Convention on International Civil Aviation.
Not every Ghanaian is currently affected but the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Stephanie S. Sullivan, warns that the scope of the limitations would include additional categories of people or discontinue additional types of visas if there’s no progress in meeting the obligations in the coming months.
Ghanaians visa applicants are in state of despair whether they would be affected or not. Ghana’s only Travel-dedicated website Jetsanza.com brings to you the affected visa categories.
Below are the affected visa categories:
Domestic employees of Ghanaian Diplomats
Employees who have been employed by Ghanaian Diplomats in the United States would not be issued visas while the sanctions are in place. The issuance of such visas known as A-3 visas would be paused.
No more five-year validity visas
The normal five-year validity period and a number of entries on Tourist and Business visas for all Ghanaian Executive and Legislative branch employees, their spouses and children under age 21 would be limited to single entry visas valid for only one month (From day of entry with valid visa). Ghanaians who are not government employees but hold diplomatic and official passports are also included.
Current visa holders, student visa applicants, Ghanaian government officials travelling for official duties as well as participants in official US government exchange programmes, are not currently affected.
Go ahead with your visa applications if you visa category was not mentioned above. You are also advised to contact the US Embassy for more clarification on your visa category and how you could be affected.
