The UK government has announced the rollout of an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement for all visitors who don’t need a visa to enter the country. Starting in April 2025, travelers from visa-free countries will need an ETA, aligning the UK with similar border security practices already adopted by countries like the US and Australia.
The ETA program, part of the UK’s push to digitize its border and immigration system, will ensure that every visitor, except British and Irish citizens, has prior permission to enter the UK. Visitors can apply for either an ETA or, if necessary, an eVisa.
Dates for ETA Implementation
- November 27, 2024: Eligible non-European travelers can begin applying for ETAs.
- January 8, 2025: ETA becomes mandatory for non-Europeans.
- March 5, 2025: ETA applications open for eligible European travelers.
- April 2, 2025: ETA requirement extends to eligible Europeans.
The ETA will cost £10, providing visitors with two years of multiple-entry access to the UK, allowing stays of up to six months per visit or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. The digital link between the ETA and the traveler’s passport will also enhance security by enabling pre-travel checks.
Digital Transition for Long-Term Visa Holders
Migrants who need a visa to live, work, or study in the UK have already shifted to eVisas, digital versions of traditional immigration documents. Those holding physical immigration documents, such as a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or ink-stamped passports, are encouraged to create online accounts to access their eVisa details. BRP holders, whose permits will expire on December 31, 2024, should make the transition to avoid disruptions.
This initiative is anticipated to contribute significantly to the UK’s tourism sector, with visitors projected to boost the economy by over £32 billion in 2024 alone. Minister for Migration and Citizenship Seema Malhotra emphasized that the shift will ensure a smoother experience for millions entering the UK each year and reinforce security through advanced digital systems.
For travelers planning a visit to the UK, the ETA application process is designed to be straightforward and will be accessible through the UK ETA app, offering quick and easy submission.
