Passengers on Turkish Airlines flight TK630, scheduled to travel from Accra’s Kotoka International Airport (ACC) to Istanbul (IST) on January 11, 2025, experienced an unexpected turn of events when the flight was diverted back to its departure point under unclear circumstances.
The Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft departed Kotoka International Airport at 9:34 PM GMT and was expected to arrive in Istanbul. However, after spending approximately two hours and 52 minutes in the air, including an extended holding pattern over Accra, the flight returned and safely landed at Kotoka International Airport at 12:26 AM GMT (+1).
Flight tracking data shows the aircraft performing multiple loops near Accra before returning, a maneuver typically associated with a holding pattern. Holding patterns are often implemented when air traffic control needs to delay a flight’s progress due to congestion, weather, or operational challenges. In this case, no official communication from Turkish Airlines or Kotoka International Airport authorities has been released to explain the diversion.
Passengers onboard and those expecting the flight’s arrival in Istanbul are left without clear answers regarding the reasons behind the unscheduled return.
