Turkish Airlines has spread its wings to Melbourne, marking a significant expansion in its global operations. The inaugural flight, a testament to Turkey’s commitment to aviation, included a layover in Singapore before making its touchdown in the vibrant Australian city.
Turkish Airlines’ Ambitious Growth
Over the past year, Turkish Airlines has not just soared across Asia and Oceania but has significantly scaled up its operations. This ambitious move included the integration of 29 new aircraft into its fleet, comprising Airbus A320neo family jets, Airbus A350-900, and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.
In 2023 alone, the airline welcomed a fleet of 29 aircraft, reflecting its dedication to modernization and expansion. This effort, coupled with broader initiatives to enhance aviation activities in Turkey, propelled the nation to the third position in Europe for total passenger numbers, ranking sixth globally. Turkish Airlines, carrying a staggering 84 million passengers in 2023, demonstrated a remarkable 16% increase from the previous year.
The Melbourne Connection
The Istanbul to Melbourne route, spanning approximately 20 hours, initially involves a 90-minute layover in Singapore. However, with the arrival of new aircraft, Turkish Airlines anticipates transforming these layovers into direct flights, streamlining the travel experience.
Contrary to expectations of the 300-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner being assigned to the Melbourne route, the 349-seat 777-300ER has been enlisted for these operations. Commencing with three flights a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday), Turkish Airlines plans to eventually offer services on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
Flight Schedule:
- Istanbul to Singapore: TK168, 17:30-08:50+1 (10h 20m)
- Singapore to Melbourne: TK168, 10:20-20:40 (7h 20m)
- Melbourne to Singapore: TK169, 22:30-03:00+1 (7h 30m)
- Singapore to Istanbul: TK169, 04:30-11:15 (11h 45m)
Jim Parashos, Chief of Aviation at Melbourne Airport, expressed enthusiasm about Turkish Airlines entering Melbourne, foreseeing increased travel possibilities. Given Melbourne’s distinction as Australia’s cultural and sporting capital, as well as its sizable Turkish community, the choice aligns perfectly with Turkish Airlines’ global strategy.
Melbourne, known for its vibrant Turkish community and accolades like “Sports City of the Decade,” now finds itself on the global aviation map. Jim Parashos believes that Turkish Airlines’ decision contributes to the city’s post-pandemic recovery.
Turkish Airlines echoed this sentiment, celebrating the inaugural Melbourne flights as a momentous occasion. Their message conveyed boundless enthusiasm for connecting Istanbul to all six continents and wished passengers an exhilarating flight.
As Melbourne emerges as a key international travel hub, Turkish Airlines’ entry adds another layer of connectivity, opening new horizons for both Turkish and Australian travelers.
