Young professionals with a Bachelor’s degree in Austria are seeing their salaries approach those of Master’s graduates, indicating a closing gap between the two groups. This conclusion comes from a recent analysis conducted by Austria’s Federal Statistical Office, Statistics Austria.
The rise in starting salaries for Bachelor’s graduates in Austria is primarily seen in the fields of health and social work, as well as education. This shift has been reported by SchengenVisaInfo.com.
The analysis also delves into how the choice of degree course impacts the income gap between men and women in the workforce.
Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas emphasized the significance of a degree in securing entry into professional life and a strong starting salary. He highlighted that starting salaries after a bachelor’s degree in the healthcare or social sector have experienced significant growth over the past decade.
With the implementation of the Bologna Process and the expansion of the University of Applied Sciences, there has been an increase in the number of job entrants with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Austria. In the academic year 2008/09, nearly 16,000 degrees were obtained without further education, but this number is expected to grow to almost 27,000 by 2020/21.
The employment rate of career starters with a Bachelorʼs or Masterʼs degree increased during the monitored period, indicating a positive trend in the job market for graduates.
The study also found that men and women in the workforce have varying income levels due in part to differences in their choice of degree program. Men are overrepresented in fields with higher incomes, such as computer science and engineering, while women are more focused on fields with comparatively lower incomes, such as social sciences and journalism.
Overall, this analysis highlights the changing landscape of career opportunities and income potential for young professionals in Austria. The expansion of educational opportunities and the evolving job market are shaping the earning potential for graduates with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the country.
