Durban, South Africa – Amid growing interest from Ghanaian tourists, the Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, has assured Ghanaians of their safety while visiting South Africa. Speaking to the Ghanaian media on the sidelines of the just-ended Africa’s Travel Indaba 2024 in Durban, Minister de Lille outlined comprehensive security measures implemented to address safety concerns and ensure a secure environment for all visitors.
In response to a question posed by travel blogger Akesse Sanza about how South Africa intends to attract Ghanaians who have security concerns, Minister de Lille detailed the proactive steps taken by the South African government. “South Africa has put a proactive plan in place,” she stated. “In 2023, the government allocated R174 million to train and deploy 2,300 young people as safety monitors.”
According to the minister, these safety monitors have been strategically deployed to frequently visited tourist establishments, providing a visible security presence and helping to deter potential incidents. The initiative aims to create a safer environment for both tourists and locals, ensuring that popular destinations are well-protected.
In addition to government efforts, Minister de Lille added that the private sector has also played a crucial role in bolstering security. She highlighted the development of the Secura app, a significant technological advancement designed to enhance tourist safety. “The app allows tourists to access 300 private security companies, the South African Police Services, and 200 medical organizations at the press of a button,” she explained. This innovative solution ensures that help is readily available to tourists, offering peace of mind during their stay.
Moreover, South Africa has launched a control operations room, which provides 24-hour monitoring, 365 days a year. “The operations room ensures a swift response to any incidents, enhancing the overall safety and security framework,” said Minister de Lille. This monitoring system allows for real-time coordination and response, further strengthening the safety net for tourists.
Ms. Nombulelo Guliwe, CEO of South African Tourism, also addressed the Ghanaian media, urging Ghanaians not exploring Africa to reconsider their perceptions about traveling within Africa. “Ghanaians not visiting South Africa are missing out,” she stated, emphasizing the missed opportunities for experiencing the continent’s beauty and diversity. Ms. Guliwe added, “Africa is beautiful and diverse, offering unforgettable experiences,” encouraging Ghanaians to explore the unique attractions South Africa has to offer.
The recent visa-free travel agreement between South Africa and Ghana, signed in November 2023, has already led to a significant increase in tourist arrivals from Ghana. This agreement simplifies travel logistics and fosters closer cultural and economic ties between the two nations. With the enhanced security measures in place, South African tourism authorities are optimistic that even more Ghanaians will choose South Africa as their preferred travel destination.
