South African Airways (SAA) has announced a major expansion in its flight schedules across Africa, boosting connectivity to key destinations as travel demand surges. Starting in November 2024, SAA will increase flights to Harare, Lusaka, Lagos, Accra, and Kinshasa, and expand services to Mauritius in December and Perth in January 2025.
SAA’s new schedule includes 12 weekly flights to Harare, an increase from 10, and 12 to Lusaka, up from 7. Travelers to Lagos and Accra will benefit from four weekly flights, an increase from the current three. Additionally, SAA’s routes to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, will rise to five flights weekly, enhancing the airline’s presence in central Africa.
The airline will also strengthen its domestic reach with increased flights to Gqeberha, now set to operate thrice daily.
According to Professor John Lamola, SAA’s Interim CEO, this expansion reflects the airline’s commitment to its role as a national carrier, focusing on routes driven by demand. Lamola emphasized the role of air travel in connecting South Africa with the broader continent, noting that most visitors this year have been from other African countries. “Our strategic growth focuses on expanding routes based on demand and feasibility,” Lamola stated, “helping to grow South Africa’s economy and fostering stronger tourism and trade links across Africa.”
In addition to its African destinations, SAA will increase flights to popular international destinations. Starting in December 2024, the airline will offer twice-daily flights to Mauritius, catering to peak holiday travelers. Routes to Perth will also see two added frequencies, starting with the first in December and the second in January 2025, totaling five weekly flights to the Australian city.
Travelers can book these new flight options directly through SAA’s website, flysaa.com.
