Durban, South Africa – South Africa is extending a warm welcome to Ghanaian tourists this summer, building on the significant increase in tourist arrivals from Ghana following the visa-free travel agreement signed in November 2023. This was a key highlight at the ongoing Africa’s Travel Indaba 2024, where South African tourism authorities emphasized the importance of intra-African travel and the unique experiences South Africa offers.
During an interaction with the Ghanaian media, Ms. Nombulelo Guliwe, CEO of South African Tourism, said “Ghanaians not visiting South Africa are missing out” on Africa’s beauty, diversity, and experiences. Ms. Guliwe urged Ghanaians and Africans as a whole to reconsider and analyze the impact of traveling within the continent. “Africa is beautiful and diverse, offering unforgettable experiences,” she added.
The visa-free agreement has not only simplified travel logistics but has also fostered a deeper cultural connection between South Africa and Ghana. This initiative is expected to continue driving tourist arrivals, as more Ghanaians explore the diverse landscapes and vibrant culture of South Africa.
Addressing safety concerns, South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, outlined the measures taken to ensure the security of tourists. “South Africa has put a proactive plan in place. In 2023, the government allocated R174 million to train and deploy 2,300 young people as safety monitors,” she stated. These safety monitors have been strategically deployed to frequently visited tourist establishments to enhance security.
Furthermore, on the private sector side, investments have been made to develop the Secura app. “The app allows tourists to access private security companies, the South African Police Services, and medical organizations at the press of a button,” Minister de Lille explained. Additionally, a control operations room was launched last August, providing 24-hour monitoring, 365 days a year, to ensure a swift response to incidents.
The measures taken underscore South Africa’s commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment for tourists. This commitment, combined with the country’s rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and world-class attractions, positions South Africa as a top travel destination for Ghanaians.
South African tourism authorities remain optimistic about the future of tourism between the two nations. The emphasis on safety, coupled with the diverse experiences South Africa offers, is expected to attract even more Ghanaian tourists this summer.
South Africa stands ready to welcome Ghanaian tourists, inviting them to discover the beauty and diversity of the continent while enjoying a safe and memorable travel experience.
