Keflavík Airport in Iceland is gearing up to welcome approximately 8.5 million passengers in 2024, representing a 9.6 per cent increase from the 7.74 million travelers in the previous year. This forecast marks 2024 as one of the biggest years for KEF, with an expected influx of foreign tourists. The airport’s all-time high for passenger volume was in 2018, with 9.8 million arrivals, followed by 2017 with 8.8 million.
The Director of Business and Development at Isavia, Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, expressed optimism for the increased traffic in 2024, citing recent investments in airport development that have enhanced facilities for passengers and staff. He also predicted a more balanced rise in the number of passengers, including foreign tourists, across both winter and summer months, contributing to year-round utilization of the airport and Iceland’s tourism infrastructure.
In addition to the rise in passenger numbers, KEF anticipates an increase in the number of foreign tourists, with nearly 2.38 million forecasted to visit Iceland in 2024. The airport has recently witnessed operational improvements with the opening of a new terminal extension and a new taxiway, reducing aircraft waiting times. Future plans for the airport include a fully operational east wing with new boarding gates, shops, and restaurants, slated to commence construction in mid-2021.
In 2024, Keflavík Airport also expanded its connectivity with the addition of five new destinations last year, bringing the total number of destinations to 83 operated by 26 airlines. Furthermore, the airport introduced a new arrival border for passengers from non-Schengen countries, aiming to streamline the handling of passengers and enhance the overall travel experience. With all these developments in the pipeline, Keflavík Airport is poised to offer an improved travel experience for passengers and set new records in the coming years.
