Travellers passing through Estonia’s Tallinn Airport can expect simpler and more efficient security checks starting this April, as new scanners will eliminate the need to remove liquids and laptops from hand luggage. According to SchengenVisaInfo.com, the current security equipment at the airport is being replaced, which may result in slightly longer wait times until the end of March.
The new screening devices at Tallinn Airport utilize 3D technology to display the contents of bags and have been deemed safe for passengers’ health, as reported by the Estonian Public Broadcasting, ERR. In addition to the installation of new scanners, there are also potential plans to remove the requirement to pack liquids in separate bags, further increasing convenience for travellers.
It’s important to note that while the rule change will apply at Tallinn Airport, it may not be applicable at other airports, and due to ongoing reconstruction works, travellers are advised to arrive at the airport at least two hours before their flight. Morning rush hours tend to be particularly busy, with lines lasting up to 25 minutes or occasionally longer.
The replacement of safety equipment comes with a hefty price tag of €2.8 million, but recent data from Tallinn Airport indicates robust passenger traffic, with 210,000 individuals passing through its gates in the last month. This marks the second-highest January turnout on record, trailing only slightly behind the pre-pandemic peak observed in January 2020, and showing an increase of 7.3 per cent in passenger numbers year-on-year.
AirBaltic, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, and SAS were among the airlines leading the charge in offering additional seating capacity last month, and a group of 14 carriers facilitated direct flights from Tallinn to 33 destinations throughout January. Additionally, the airport saw the inauguration of charter services to Sri Lanka, diversifying the travel options available to passengers.
