Munich Airport Anticipates Record Levels of Traffic to Asia in Summer 2024
The Munich Airport has announced that it is expected to reach new record levels of traffic to Asia in the upcoming summer flight schedule, which is set to start on March 31. This news comes as the airport continues to expand its flight offerings to East and Southeast Asian destinations.
Currently, nine airlines have scheduled 107 weekly flights to 14 destinations across ten East and Southeast Asian countries. This is a significant increase from 2019, the pre-pandemic year, when five airlines operated 101 flights to ten destinations in seven countries.
The Munich Airport currently offers flights to East and Southeast Asia, including Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing, Shanghai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Seoul, Tashkent, Dushanbe, Male, Taipei, Bangkok, and Singapore. Airlines that operate flights to these destinations include Lufthansa, Air China, All Nippon Airways, BeOnd, EVA Airways, Singapore Airlines, Somon Air, Thai Airways, and Uzbekistan Airways.
To meet the growing demand for air travel, Lufthansa will also temporarily deploy the world’s largest passenger aircraft, the Airbus A380, on the route to Delhi from April 1, 2024. Additionally, airlines will be increasing the frequency of flights to certain destinations. For example, airlines will operate flights to Beijing from three times a week to daily, and Osaka in Japan will have five weekly flights from April and daily flights from May onward.
Another exciting development is the expansion of All Nippon Airways’ Munich service from four to seven weekly flights starting July 2. This demonstrates the airport’s commitment to providing diverse and convenient flight options to Asian destinations.
Apart from the countless tourist attractions, Munich Airport has noted that Asian countries have an important role in the global economy. Numerous Bavarian companies maintain economic relationships with businesses and markets in Asia, taking advantage of the flight offerings from Munich.
In addition to the increase in traffic to Asia, the overall passenger traffic at Munich Airport has returned to 80% of 2019 levels. The airport saw 37 million passengers travel through in 2023, which is five million more than in 2022. The CEO of Flughafen München GmbH, Jost Lammers, commented that this growth reflects the strong recovery of the aviation industry in Munich and is a sign of the high demand for air travel among the population and the economy.
Furthermore, the number of flight movements rose by six percent, and freight volumes increased by seven percent compared to 2022. Additionally, Munich Airport began testing a new service to provide passengers with faster access to security and passport control, aiming to reduce waiting times and improve the overall travel experience for passengers. These developments signal a positive outlook for Munich Airport and its role as a key hub for travel to and from Asia.
