The Latvian authorities have recently taken decisive action against Russians who have failed to meet the residency requirements in the country, with a large number of them not submitting the necessary documents on time. According to reports from SchengenVisaInfo.com, letters have been sent to these individuals, urging them to leave Latvia.
Russians residing in Latvia were given a deadline to arrange their residency status, but many did not comply with the regulations. The Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, according to the Public Broadcasting of Latvia, is now working in collaboration with the State Border Guard to identify and remove those who have failed to meet the requirements.
The authorities are also targeting Russian citizens who have attempted but failed the Latvian language test. In spite of around 2,500 Russians not submitting the required documents, there is still an opportunity for them to complete the process in order to legally continue living in Latvia.
It has been stressed that the expulsion of Russians who have not met the requirements will not happen overnight, and there is uncertainty about the exact number of individuals affected. The Minister of the Interior of Latvia has even raised the possibility of introducing internal border checks to maintain control over the movement of Russians within the country.
This situation raises concerns about the overall number of Russians residing in Latvia, as the absence of border controls allows for undetected border crossings. The uncertainty surrounding this issue adds an air of tension to the situation, and it remains to be seen how the Latvian authorities will proceed in handling the residency status of those affected.
