Germany remains a popular destination for asylum seekers, with 9,399 applications from Georgian citizens registered by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees in 2023. However, only 0.3 percent of these applications were approved, reflecting the strict requirements for obtaining asylum in Germany.
In total, Germany received 352,000 asylum applications in 2023, marking a 51 percent increase from the previous year. The majority of these applications were from first-time applicants, representing the highest volume of asylum applications since 2016.
Of the 260,000 applications decided in 2023, over half were approved by the BAMF. The majority of applications originated from individuals fleeing conflict and human rights violations in countries such as Syria, Turkey, and Afghanistan.
While positive decisions were granted to a significant number of Syrians and Afghans, only 13 percent of Turkish applicants received approval. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized the need to maintain existing policies based on the 2023 asylum statistics, highlighting a 25 percent increase in the number of individuals repatriated to their countries of origin compared to 2022.
In addition, BAMF granted 35,316 initial applications for asylum in November 2023, bringing the annual number to 304,581 initial applications for asylum. The data also reveal a significant increase in the proportion of male asylum seekers aged 16 to 40 in Germany over the past five years.
Overall, the latest statistics from BAMF highlight the complex and evolving nature of asylum applications in Germany, reflecting the ongoing challenges faced by those seeking refuge in the country.
