Ibiza’s Thriving Sports Scene Lures Fitness Enthusiasts and Athletic Travelers
Known for its legendary nightlife and stunning beaches, Ibiza is quickly becoming a sought-after destination for fitness enthusiasts and sports aficionados. With its picturesque landscape, Mediterranean climate, and growing portfolio of exciting sports events, Ibiza is set to shine as a major sporting hotspot in 2024.
In 2022, the island played host to nine sports events that attracted an impressive 28,800 visitors. These visitors contributed significantly to the local economy, generating a noteworthy €30.1 million in economic impact, according to the Institute of Statistics of the Balearic Islands. With a wide array of outdoor activities available against the backdrop of Ibiza’s natural beauty, it’s no wonder the island is making waves in the sporting world.
One of the major highlights for 2024 is the return of the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) European Open, scheduled for September 28-29. This event aims to crown the new ‘European Champion’ and has already created a buzz within the sporting community. The announcement was made at the World Travel Market 2023, with the PTO and the Spanish Triathlon Federation, in the presence of Ibiza’s president, Vicente Mari.
President Vicente Mari expressed the importance of Ibiza’s image and income as a world-class sports destination, noting that the previous PTO Tour in May 2023 helped generate an estimated economic impact of €12.5 million and reshaped how people perceive the island. With this event, Ibiza sends a clear message that it’s ‘open for business’ year-round, rather than just during the peak summer months.
The PTO European Open’s course will traverse the scenic island, starting at Figueretas Beach, proceeding with a bike ride towards San Antonio, and culminating with a run through Ibiza Port into the World Heritage-protected old town. Following the success of the 2023 event, which brought in 12,000 additional visitors and provided a significant boost to the local economy, the 2024 edition promises to be even more remarkable.
